Kuala Lumpur is a fascinating city in Southeast Asia. It's a diverse city that has so many different dimensions and so many different layers. The downtown area is home to massively tall skyscrapers like the KL Tower and the twin Petronas Towers. However, there are still some areas that seem ancient, areas that have remained similar for many years despite the rapid construction and development surrounding them.
Chow Kit Market, the largest wet fresh market in Kuala Lumpur is where the ingredients of Malaysian cuisine come alive. The sprawling market is located in the Chow Kit area of town and includes just about every fresh ingredient you could ever imaging for cooking Malay, Indian, or Chinese cuisine. Though the market is outdoors and looks a little makeshift, it's actually quite organized and there are sections for each kind of food. One the outside is the fruit section, which includes a wonderful selection of fresh tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, durian, and snake fruit. On one side is full of Malaysian spices and herb like vegetables including one of my all time favorite things to eat on the planet - the stink bean. Stink bean, also known as petai or cluster beans, are everywhere throughout Chow Kit Market. They have a little gaseous aroma, but I absolutely love everything about them. In the middle of the market is the section for seafood and for meat. The lively seafood includes lots of different kinds of fish, squid and crab - fish probably being the most prevalent in the market. For meat there's mostly goat and beef - since Malaysia is predominantly Muslim, pork is mostly found in other Chinese markets but not much at Chow Kit. The lively display of all things food and the life that surrounds fresh local markets is the reason why I love visiting a wet market in any place I travel.
Surrounding Chow Kit market are a variety of different restaurants including some delicious nasi padang restaurants. The market is visited frequently by many people from Indonesia and Africa as well as locals to make the market a true melting pot of cultures and cuisines in Kuala Lumpur. Located just a few minutes by train from the downtown central area of town, Chow Kit Market is easily accessible and a great place to visit.
