Excavations of the Joint Prehistoric Project, Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures

Digitized 16mm silent film reel from the ISAC Audiovisual Collection showing excavation survey of the Joint Prehistoric Project from the 1951 field season, filmed by Dr. Carl Kraeling. Dr. Robert Braidwood and Bruce Howe are featured, as well as objects from Barda Balka, Karim Shahir, and Jarmo. Many local workers, who are unnamed in the film, are shown excavating the site. It was a common practice for ISAC (then the Oriental Institute) to hire large numbers of local men, women, and children to perform the physical labor at dig sites. Sites filmed are shown during the following timestamps: 1:58-6:03(-6:10?): Jarmo (Early Neolithic to Late Neolithic) & Karim Shahir (Early Neolithic), 6:10-7:15: Palegawra (Epipaleolithic), 7:53-8:10: Barda Balka (Middle Paleolithic) View in the ISAC Collection: https://isac-idb.uchicago.edu/id/bcfc7fbf-6d1e-4a32-aeaa-c4d90b3f526d
