Discover the history and development of Northrop's flying wing, focusing specifically on the revolutionary XB-35 and YB-49 experimental aircraft. These magnificent aviation marvels bridged the gap between World War II and the early Cold War era, pushing the absolute limits of aeronautical engineering and challenging everything the military knew about bomber design. From the early test phases to the tragic scrapping of the fleet, the journey of the flying wing is a fascinating tale of visionary engineering meeting the harsh realities of mid-century technology.
The concept of a tailless aircraft was championed by aviation pioneer Jack Northrop, who believed that eliminating the fuselage and tail section would drastically reduce drag and increase aerodynamic efficiency. In April 1941, the United States Army Air Corps initiated a request for a bomber capable of carrying 10,000 pounds of bombs to a target 5,000 miles away and returning without refueling. Fearing that Britain might fall to Axis forces, the US needed a transoceanic bomber capable of striking Europe directly from North America. Northrop responded with the XB-35, a massive propeller-driven flying wing constructed largely from newly developed magnesium alloys to save weight.
Developing the XB-35 was fraught with mechanical hurdles. To test the unconventional aerodynamics, Northrop first built the N-9M, a series of one-third-scale prototypes. These smaller test beds proved the flying wing concept was viable, relying on split-flap rudders for yaw control. However, when the full-scale XB-35 was completed, its powerplants became its Achilles' heel. The aircraft was fitted with four Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major radial engines driving complex contra-rotating propellers. The intricate gearboxes required to operate these dual propellers suffered from severe vibration issues and frequent mechanical failures, grounding the aircraft for extended periods and delaying the testing program significantly.
As jet propulsion technology advanced rapidly in the post-war years, the Air Force authorized the conversion of two XB-35 airframes to jet power, resulting in the YB-49. Powered by eight Allison J35 turbojet engines buried inside the wing, the YB-49 was exceptionally fast and elegant. During testing, military engineers discovered an incredible side effect of the aircraft's smooth, tailless design: it had an incredibly low radar cross-section. Radar operators repeatedly lost the massive aircraft on their screens, marking the YB-49 as an accidental pioneer of early stealth technology.
