Making a Chair Stay a Chair

If you walked through the Eisenhower National Historic Site today, you'd see two well-loved, well-worn upholstered armchairs in the living room. But unless you'd watched this video, you'd be unaware of the painstaking conservation process they'd gone through, which included reversing previous efforts. At the @NationalParkService museum conservation lab, National Council for Preservation Education intern Ellie Fitzgerald and textile conservation post-graduate fellow Maeve O'Shea walk Adam Savage through the decision-making and laborious process of custom-dyeing silk underlays and hand-sewing sheer polyester overlays. The best part? The chairs are preserved while still telling the story of Dwight D. and Mamie Eisenhower, just another married couple spending time together in their living room in their comfortable, threadbare chairs. We're doing a panel with current and former National Park Service museum conservators at Awesome Con on Sunday, March 15!!!
