There’s more to Tahiti than paradise beaches. Tony travels to French Polynesia in search of its lesser-known sides: ancient legends of cannibalism, a unique subsistence of transvestites, and the artistic legacy of Paul Gauguin, whose work and life in Tahiti deeply inspired Tony. Riding through the jungle with Temetai, Tony explores the history of the fierce, tattooed Maori warriors and visits Ipona on Hiva Oa, home to centuries-old tikis and Maroian ruins. He meets Maurice and his son, who keep alive the Marquesian tradition of identity-rich warrior tattoos—one of which Tony receives himself, though not without a scolding for being a bit too buzzed on beer. The journey continues with a vibrant meal hosted by local legend Marie Antoinette and another ride through Tahiti’s lush, hauntingly storied landscape.
