Unagi (うなぎ) is freshwater eel and it’s a real delicacy in Japan. There are many many restaurant dedicated to serving only unagi, and in Tokyu you have plenty of choices. Thanks to my friend David (https://www.instagram.com/the.hungry.tourist/), I went to Obana Restaurant (尾花) which is a very highly rated, some say it’s the best, unagi in Tokyo.
What I like about Obana Restaurant (尾花) is that there are no reservations, so it’s first come, first serve, and it’s one of the classic Japanese food restaurants where you have to arrive early and wait in line for a chance to eat this legendary unagi. I arrived about 1 hour early, and already there were 20 people in the line in front of me. The wait was quite interesting, because as I was standing in line, a festival parade came walking right past.
The restaurant is within an old style Japanese building, with tatami floors, and you sit on the floor with a low table. They first steam the eel, and then grill it, and serve it in the lacquered box the traditional Japanese way.
I’ve had unagi before, but nothing compared to this unagi. It was absolutely exquisite, the most buttery perfectly cooked unagi I’ve ever had. Also, I liked how the sauce glaze was not overpowering like it sometimes can be, but it was light and just accented the wonderful eel.
Obana Restaurant (尾花) is not cheap, but the quality you get is mind-blowing.
